A New Level of Service

Faylana drew the stocking up her long leg and clipped it to the lacey garter. Caldric was watching her from the bed. He seemed angry at her for wearing the revealing costume, which only added salt to the wounds caused by their disagreements throughout the day. He was mad that she was wearing the uniform forced upon her by Sneed. The man he had arranged for her to visit.

“Stop staring at me, Caldric,” she said, fastening the other stocking to its garter. She smoothed the ruffled skirt down, barely covering her silky panties and revealing much of the garter. When she looked over at Caldric on the bed he had turned away from her. She wanted to throw something at him. “I told you, Caldric, I have done nothing with this loathsome collector. I only do the work he requires.”

“In that costume?”

“You are being a child,” hissed Faylana. “You sent me off to this man to clean his house. It is not my fault he makes me wear… this?”

She gestured at her bodice and her breasts nearly burst free of their confinement. Caldric muttered something and Faylana only managed to stop from stomping her foot because she knew it would wake Garth.

“I am going,” she said, yanking her cloak off the peg by the door and covering her revealing costume. “I will do nothing with Persinius Sneed. I will clean after a long day of working in the bakery and you can lay about the house.”

“Do as you want,” said Caldric. He lowered his voice to mutter to himself, “You wouldn’t tell me the truth if you had done something with him.”

Caldric’s words would have gone unheard by a human wife, but Faylana was an elf, with hearing much more acute than a human. She easily heard his bitter words and felt them like a knife in her heart. He still did not trust her and there was her proof. She had never lied to him. Never. Yet here he was, acting as though she betrayed his trust at every turn.

“Goodnight,” she said, more hurt than angry as she staggered out the door.

It was a long walk to Sneed’s house. She had a lot of time to consider Caldric’s attitude. The man was impossible. Sometimes he seemed outraged by her encounters with other men and just as often he encouraged her to stray. Navigating his feelings could be as difficult as controlling her own desires and understanding the mores of human society. But this complete lack of trust in her word was a new development.

An intolerable one.

She arrived at Sneed’s narrow house and felt her pulse quicken as she stared up the front steps at the door. She loathed the debt collector. It was not that he was ugly, for she had no aversion to men which others might consider unattractive. No, it was his crass manipulation. He was cruel. His heart twisted by his lust.

In that moment, bristling at her husband’s mistrust, staring up at Sneed’s house, the collector’s cruelty was a doorway.
